CYC Sports Continues to Promote Christian Values Through "Random Acts of Sportsmanship"

Several years ago, the CYC started a program called Random Acts of Sportsmanship (RAS).  We asked any parent, coach, spectator or player to simply report any and all outstanding acts of sportsmanship they witnessed during a CYC game.  These are acts that we want to encourage all our participants to display every time they take the field or court.  In addition to recognizing winners of games, we feel it is imperative for the CYC to search for and recognize Acts of Sportsmanship at our athletic events.  As a Catholic organization we must train our children to display Christian values in all parts of their lives, especially during athletic competition.

The Sportsmanship Brigade of the St. Louis Sports Commission has been helping the CYC spot Random Acts of Sportsmanship.  They have been attending CYC games, encouraging and rewarding Good Sportsmanship.  Here are some of the RAS that were spotted recently at CYC volleyball games:

  • 5th Grade volleyball at Blessed Theresa - St. Ferdinand played the entire game with six players - the minimum required to compete. That didn't matter, though. Whatever these young ladies lacked in personnel, they made up for with heart and determination. Not only did they win the game, they caught the attention of Brigade members with their tireless effort and unwavering support for one another.
  • St. Norbert was equally impressive. The coaching staff kept the game fun while giving the girls sound instruction. Hustle was St. Norbert's game as they dove for balls and showed great effort throughout. It was a good first game for the Brigade to open the fall campaign. Both teams were rewarded for their good sportsmanship and positive attitudes. Pizza for everyone!
  • Then on to 7th Grade volleyball in South County - QAS vs SMMA - Queen of All Saints eventually won the game, but St. Margaret Mary's kids had nothing to hang their heads about. They are well-coached and represented their families and parish with tremendous pride. As a matter of fact, both teams were sportsmanship award worthy. Teammates praised one another on positive plays and offered words of encouragement on negative ones. They didn't yell at opponents, coaches or fans. The girls never showed visible signs of frustration by screaming or slamming the ball. They displayed a level of sportsmanship and character that the entire CYC should be proud of. Brigade members certainly are.

As always, we are happy to have the Sportsmanship Brigade visit CYC fields and gyms.  We are happy to partner our Random Acts of Sportsmanship along with the great work the Brigade does. We encourage you to email any RAS you see to buzzswanston@archstl.org.  Also, if you would like to know more about the St. Louis Sports Commission's Sportsmanship Brigade, including scheduling and volunteering information, please visit www.sportsmanship.org or call (314) 345-5130.
