Cardinal Wuerl, a Pittsburgh native, has served as the archbishop of Washington since 2006. He also serves as a member of the Congregation for the Clergy and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, chair of the board of directors of the National Catholic Educational Association and chancellor at The Catholic University of America.

Among the highlights of his ministry in Washington, D.C., was hosting the apostolic visit of Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.

Cardinal Wuerl was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI on Nov. 20, 2010. Prior to his appointment to Washington, he served as bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh from 1988 to 2006, preceding Bishop David Zubik. He became a bishop in 1985 when he was appointed an auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Seattle.

Cardinal Wuerl was ordained a priest in 1966. His first assignment was as an assistant pastor at St. Rosalia Parish in Pittsburgh’s Greenfield neighborhood — the hometown and home parish of Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy.

Cardinal Wuerl also served as secretary to Cardinal John Wright in Vatican City from 1969 to 1979 and as rector of St. Paul Seminary in Pittsburgh from 1981 to 1985.

The convocation will open at 8:30 a.m. with Mass with Cardinal Wuerl and Bishop David Ricken. The keynote is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Three rounds of breakout sessions will cover such topics as ecumenism, the Eucharist, reality of human trafficking in Wisconsin, social communications, stewardship, evangelization, leadership skills, engaging children in a culture of distractions, end-of-life care issues, Mass attendance, pastoral plans, marriage and family, catechesis, cultural awareness and Catholic school vouchers.

The new evangelization will be discussed further in select workshops. Sr. Marie Kolbe Zamora, STL, theology program director at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family, Manitowoc, will present “What’s New About New Evangelization” and “The Holy Spirit as the Principal Agent of Evangelization.” Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosuis, founder of The Crossroads Initiative, will also focus on the new evangelization, providing an overview of the papal teaching and practical tips on how to share it.

According to a 2013 survey conducted by CARA, a non-profit research center affiliated with Georgetown University, only 24 percent of Catholics polled said they attended Mass once a week or more. Mark Mogilka, diocesan director of Stewardship and Pastoral Services, will present “So You Want to Improve Mass Attendance?” Mogilka will look at what attracts, keeps and discourages people from attending Mass.

Two workshops will feature panel discussions. Brenda White, associate superintendent for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, and representatives of diocesan voucher schools will offer “Why My Catholic School Should be a Voucher School.”

Representatives from area ethnic groups will discuss hospitality and understanding to create richer faith-based settings in “Cultural Awareness: What Every Catholic Should Know.”

Dr. James Healy, director of the Center of Family Ministry, Diocese of Joliet, Ill., who has spoken in the diocese in the past, will offer two marriage-themed workshops.

Bishop Robert Morneau will present “Eucharist: Jesus Present and Manifest.”

Other scheduled presenters include Morgan Young, an attorney with the Wisconsin Coalition of Domestic Violence; Margo Truett, pastoral assistant at St. Anne Church, Columbus, Ga.; Daniel Mulhall, director for professional development and Hispanic catechesis; Dr. Joseph White, a child psychologist; Raymond Weiss, director of mission services, Felician Village, Manitowoc; and Matthew Livingstone, diocesan web and social media administrator.

The Leadership Convocation is open to all. The event is partially funded by the Bishop’s Appeal. Sponsors include Liturgical Publications, Inc., and the Diocese of Green Bay departments of Stewardship and Pastoral Services, Ministry Formation, Education, New Evangelization, Living Justice, Worship and Communications. The $50 registration fee includes lunch. To register, go to www.gbdioc.org/convocation.
