Archdiocese of St. Louis to commemorate the birth and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Mass, award ceremony

Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice to take place this Sunday

On Sunday, the Archdiocese of St. Louis will commemorate the birth and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice and an awards ceremony to honor area youth who have demonstrated commitment to justice in the broader community.

Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson will be the celebrant for the Mass, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica, Lindell Boulevard at Newstead Avenue in the Central West End. Reverend Arthur J. Cavitt, Executive Director of the St. Charles Lwanga Center, will be the homilist.

Following Mass, Archbishop Carlson will present the Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. "Model of Justice" Award to 33 high school students during a reception in nearby Boland Hall. These young people have dedicated time and service to a number of outreach programs in the name of justice and human dignity. The awards ceremony is coordinated by the the archdiocesan St. Charles Lwanga Center which provides spiritual formation and leadership development for the African-American Catholic community and beyond. For more information, call 314.367.7929.

"The Mass for Peace and Justice provides a personal and communal celebration for us in the archdiocese to remember the Gospel call to be a people of service for and with others," said Javier Orozco who is Director of Hispanic Ministry and also on the planning committee for the day. "I am delighted that we have this occasion to celebrate the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to encourage one another in the work of peace and justice."
