Spiritual Boot Camp

boot campDo you ever get the feeling that you’re in spiritual boot camp and that God is breaking you down so that He can build you back up? Kind of like the Marines? Well, I do.

Let me just point out that, while I have the utmost respect for the Marines and all branches of the military, I am NOT the type of person who seeks to be broken down and built up. If I could learn the spiritual lessons that I need to learn without the pain and suffering, I would definitely sign up for that. I mean, really, can’t we just get an email from God saying something like, “Laura, I’ve noticed you’re too focused on yourself and you take your blessings for granted. Fix that.-God” I’d follow His directions! Really I would! Ok… maybe I wouldn’t.

The reality is that I probably would send God a short reply about a week after getting His email. I imagine it would go something like this-“Dear Lord, Thanks for the email but could you be more specific? I’m not sure I see what you’re talking about. I asked my friends and they (respectfully) disagreed. They don’t see it and, frankly, neither do I. Can you send some examples and suggestions for change? I look forward to hearing from you.-Laura”

And that’s when God smacks His forehead and says, “I should have sent a plague instead of an email! Whose idea was it to get all fancy with the technology? Peter!?! …Where is that guy?” [God exits stage right mumbling to Himself in disgust.]

The truth is-I’m a slow learner. And I’m kind of hard-hearted/headed at times. I don’t always pick up on His subtle hints or not-so-subtle ones. I usually have to be hit over the head to get the message He’s trying to send me. In fact, I really feel bad for God. THIS is all he has to work with when he deals with me. Of course, He knew what he was getting into when He started this project…I guess that’s why He doesn’t send the email…
