Iowa: Sick Ad Claims Pro-Life Joni Ernst Doesn’t Care About Sexual Assault Victims

According to the latest USA Today/Suffolf University poll, pro-life Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) has a narrow lead over pro-abortion Rep. Bruce Braley. Among likely voters, she leads Braley 47%-43%. Ernst is an officer in the Army National Guard and has successful presented herself as a potential leader for Iowa.

But a new television ad released by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee attacks Ernst’s pro-life views. The ad features an Iowa nurse named Kim Tweedy who says she has worked on the sexual assault response team.

joniernstTweedy says, “I’ve seen lots of cases, many of them are very brutal. It breaks your heart. I’ll never understand politicians who make it even harder, politicians like Joni Ernst. She’d outlaw abortion, even for victims of rape and incest. She’d ban a woman’s right to choose, even for women who’ve been through that trauma, absolutely brutalized. Joni Ernst has no idea what people like this go through.”

However, in a debate last month Ernst said the personhood bill she sponsored with 20 other members of the state Senate “would not do any of the things that he stated it would do. That amendment is simply a statement that I support life.”

The pro-abortion lobby is trying to paint Ernst as an extremist. And Ernst said these ads were created to scare women.

In June, the National Right to Life Committee endorsed Ernst in her campaign for U.S. Senate. Carol Tobias, President of National Right to Life said, “As a state senator, Joni Ernst has been an outspoken leader in the fight to protect innocent human life in Iowa. Joni Ernst will bring her record of strong pro-life leadership to the U.S. Senate. The most vulnerable members of our human family will be well served by Joni Ernst’s election to the U.S. Senate.”

Additionally, Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser commented on Ernst’s opponent, Bruce Braley’s, radical abortion position.

She said, “Congressman Braley’s claim that Joni Ernst has a ‘radical’ position on abortion is laughable, and he clearly needs to look in the mirror. In Congress, Braley has been a rubber stamp for the abortion industry. Not only has he voted for taxpayer-funded abortion, he opposed a common sense limit on abortion after 5 months of pregnancy. Braley even co-sponsored legislation to wipe out all state limits on abortion and enshrine abortion on-demand until birth.”
