Prayer and Reflection for My High School

Holy Cross Crest

Holy Cross Crest

The following is the prayer and reflection I shared with my high school last week:

Good morning students. This is Ms. HD. For those of you who have taken my theology classes you know that I am here to move you closer to God that is my purpose in life. You also know that I believe questioning your faith is a good thing.

You are all at an age where you question authority, rules and any and all institutions. That’s exactly where you should be right now. If you are questioning, you are awake in your life. It is much easier to be asleep in life. It would be easier if you were still at home in your warm comfy bed this morning. But you’re not. Your parents choose to send you to Holy Cross for a good faith-filled education.

I pray that each of you are questioning, searching, and seeking the answers you need to become closer to God because that is where you will find all the answers. That is where you will find peace, acceptance, comfort, and the ability to be who you were always intended to be in this world.

I know that as a theology teacher I am open to allowing God to use my life to help you find God. I can’t do it for you. Today, as you wake up and face this Monday I pray that you will find God in this place, in one another, in the words of the scriptures and in your hearts.

I would like to share with you one of my favorite passages from the Bible. In times when I feel alone, challenged, unaccepted and simply confused these words from the Living Word of God console me. Let down your guard for a moment open your hearts and your minds and truly listen to what God says to you in the next few moments:

Romans 8: 31-39

“What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us. Who will condemn? It is Christ [Jesus] who died, rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things,* nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth,* nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

If right now in your life you don’t believe, or you can’t believe let my belief be enough for both of us. Know that each one of you will be in my prayers today. Amen
