Paraplegic Veteran Surprises His Bride With First Dance on Their Wedding Day

Paraplegic veteran, Sergeant Joey Johnson surprised his wife when he got out of his wheelchair for the first dance at their wedding. Sgt. Johnson served for ten months in Afghanistan and met his wife, Michelle Johnson, at a country music concert four weeks after his return.

Michelle said, “We realized that we had the same birthday, June 29, and same last name Johnson.”

joeyjohnsonMichelle said Sgt. Johnson came home with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and bought a motorcycle to help with the rush. Tragically, however, in 2012 Johnson suffered a spinal injury in a motor cycle accident. Now he can’t feel anything from the chest down.

The accident occurred a month after they met but Michelle stayed with him. She said, “Our family and I have been through so much, but we all know that Joey is still the same person, funny and loving guy he was before. He had to learn a different way of life with him and his chair: from showering, getting dressed and trying to function every day. But we are soul mates.”

The couple married on June 28th, the day before both of their birthdays.

The Daily Mail shares more about Joey’s Wedding Surprise and Michelle’s response:

“If you know Joey, he cannot keep a secret. But he made my dreams come true and I never knew how special our day would really be” Michelle, 27, told ABC News.

After cutting their wedding cake, Michelle’s mother and mother-in-law whisked her away to the bridal suite while Joey got ready for the big reveal.

“I kind of knew something was going on, but I really never knew what was to come,” said Michelle.

She found out what exactly was up moments later, when she walked in to find her groom standing up and ready to dance.

“Everyone was crying in the room,” said Michelle.

“It was so amazing to be eye to eye with him again and such a dream come true.”
