Mother Arrested After Workers at Recycling Plant Find Body of Dead Newborn Baby
Despite the fact that safe haven laws exist allowing mothers or parents to surrender a newborn to authorities instead of killing or abandoning the baby, the numbers of news stories about infanticide cases is still alarmingly high. Earlier this month, workers at a recycling plant in Michigan have found the body of a dead newborn baby.
According to the Roseville Police Department, the body was that of a white male estimated to be one to three days old.
Workers at the center — located in the 30800 block of Groesbeck — were sorting different forms of recyclable materials when at about 11 p.m. a bundle came down the sorting line. When workers opened the bundle, they found the body of the newborn child.
Now, authorities have arrested the woman who they say is the mother of the child.
A 24-year-old metro Detroit woman has been arrested in connection with the death and abandonment of a baby boy found Jan. 14 at a Roseville recycling center, Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said this afternoon.
The woman, he said, is believed to be the baby’s mother.
“We believe we have the person responsible,” Berlin said.
Berlin would not say specifically where the woman is from because police are continuing to investigate and conduct search warrants. She was taken into custody without incident while walking on the street about 12:30 p.m., he said, but has not been formally charged.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and any potential criminal charges. When asked what charges are being examined, Berlin said, “Murder, to start with.” The woman could be charged and arraigned Tuesday afternoon, Berlin said.
Berlin said authorities believe the death occurred in metro Detroit, but not in Roseville. The woman – who Berlin said has no prior criminal record – may not be arraigned in Roseville but in the court in the community where the death occurred.

He was unofficially given the name Henry Alexander Macomb by morgue workers, and the Macomb County community rallied last week with donations for a funeral and burial when the appropriate time comes.
Authorities originally suspected the baby was dumped in a Dumpster in mid- or lower-Michigan and brought to the recycling center. It was possible, but not likely, Berlin previously said, that the baby was dumped at the center.
The information makes it appear that one suspect int he case may have been ruled out.
A woman who suffocated her newborn baby girl to death in 2013 and placed her body face down in the trash has given birth again to a baby boy. In a court hearing, she told authorities she “doesn’t recall” where she dumped this baby’s body.
Melissa Mitin, a 25-year-old woman from Michigan, was charged last year with murder after allegedly suffocating her newborn daughter to death to conceal her pregnancy to family and friends.
Mitin allegedly had not known about her pregnancy when she delivered the baby in December, according to local police officials. The infant was born alive and was a few minutes old when she died. Dr. Joyce deJong, Ingham County’s medical examiner, ruled the death a “homicide due to a positional asphyxiation or due to a positional cause,” although she could not determine during autopsy how the baby was suffocated.
Mitin was arrested and arraigned May 12 in 55th District Court on the murder charge. She faces up to life in prison if convicted.
However, the young woman was out on bail in relation to that murder charge and she got pregnant again. Mitin was back court again this week and told officials about another baby she gave birth to, who is now missing. Some news stories alleged that Mitin was the mother of the baby found at the recycling plant.
