How often do we feel like Peter? We have experienced heartbreak, we have denied our best friend, we have watched a close one pass away; and then we are asked to prove ourselves. We are challenged in a new way, not once, but three times.

Immediately before this passage in the gospel of John, Peter jumped overboard into the sea to pursue Jesus. He was filled with love for his friend and teacher and wished to be close to Him. Now, Jesus puts that love to the test. Just as Peter had denied Jesus three times during His trial, he is now given the chance to redeem himself.

Peter should give us hope. Think about it: he challenged Jesus, asked some silly questions, and just when Jesus needed a supportive friend, Peter walked away. And yet, Jesus saw fit to make him the first pope and leader of our Church.

Just like Peter, we may have turned away from our Lord time and time and time again. It may seem like we can never patch things up. But ultimately, He asks just one thing after repentance: “Follow Me.” He wants our love, and He wants to love us in return. In fact, He loves us so much that even though He knows we’ll inevitably choose sin again, He continues to hold us in existence. What a merciful Savior!

Continue to turn back to the Lord. No matter the offense, He will welcome you back with open arms. Simply resolve to follow Him.

Ponder:

How do I continue to turn away from God in my life? What is one way that I can actively work to change that particular pattern of sin?

Pray:

My God, thank you for loving me despite my consistency in turning away from you. Keep pursuing my heart, and allow me to draw close to you.
