The Compass honored with 12 press awards

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Compass was honored with 12 Catholic Press Awards from the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada during the 2015 Catholic Media Convention June 26 in Buffalo. It was the highest number of awards received in one year in the newspaper’s history.

The awards included three first-place awards, four second-place awards, three third-place awards and two honorable mention awards. They included:

  • First Place, Best Promotional House Ad, “You’ll Need The Compass to Keep Up With Me,” which featured cartoonist Joe Heller’s cartoon of Pope Francis.
  • First Place, Best Editorial, National/International Issue for papers with a 17,001-40,000 circulation, for “Don’t forget about the homeless” by Sam Lucero.
  • First Place, Best Reporting on Special Age Group: Senior Citizens,” for the Senior Living section by The Compass staff.
  • Second Place, Best News Writing Originating With the Paper on a Local or Regional Event, “Bishop Ricken leads healing service for survivors of sexual abuse,” by Steve Wideman.
  • Second Place, Best Editorial, Local Issue for papers with a 17,001-40,000 circulation, for “Thank you for your service: Tip of hat to all who serve the faith,” by Patricia Kasten.
  • Second Place, Best Feature Writing for papers with a 17,001-40,000 circulation, for “The story of Lax Chapel and Marian shrine,” by Patricia Kasten.
  • Second Place, Best Sports Journalism: Sports News, for “Team begins a new faith tradition,” by Jeff Kurowski.
  • Third Place, Best Sports Journalism: Sports News, for “Silver Lake students honor ‘true hero,’” by Benjamin Wideman.
  • Third Place, Best Local Retail Campaign Originating with the Publication, for “Knights of Columbus” advertisement, by Amy Kawula and Katie Jagiello.
  • Third Place, Best Editorial, National/International Issue for papers with a 17,001-40,000 circulation, for “Death penalty not the answer,” by Sam Lucero.
  • Honorable Mention, Best Single Ad Originating with the Publication: Color Ad, for “Faith on the Fox” by Amber Backus.
  • Honorable Mention, Best Regular Column: Spiritual Life, for “Foundations of Faith” by Patricia Kasten.
