Daily Gospel Reflection for September 1, 2015

Today’s Gospel: Luke 4:31-37 

When confronted by a man with an unclean demon, Jesus commanded the evil spirit to leave the man. All that witnessed this exorcism were amazed by the authority with which Jesus spoke. Our life as Christians is really no different than this scripture passage. Each day we encounter people who don’t believe in God, or who have evil intentions, and it is our baptismal duty to combat evil with the love and compassion of Jesus. This can simply be accomplished by a smile, a heartfelt gesture, an act of kindness, an outstretched helping hand. Our world will only begin to change if we actively share the love and joy of God with all we meet, not just those who look like us or act like us. God is calling us to love all people so that we may help overcome the evils of society.

Ponder:

Reflect on a time when you felt called to defend your faith to others. What did you experience? Did you call upon the power of the Spirit to help you?

Pray:

Lord God,
You gave Jesus authority over the heavens and the earth.
Help us to draw strength from the words and actions of Jesus
that we, too, may speak with the wisdom of the Spirit to
those we meet each day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
