Birth Father Demands Surrogate Have Abortion After Learning She’s Pregnant With Triplets

A Georgia man never bargained for triplets when he hired a surrogate to have his child by in vitro fertilization. Now, he is demanding that she abort one of the babies.

Surrogate mother Melissa Cook told The Sun that she is facing immense pressure to abort one of the triplets. The California woman is 17-weeks pregnant. She found out about the triplets at about eight or nine weeks, and the biological father has been pressuring her to abort one of them since then, the report states.

The babies were conceived using the father’s sperm and a 20-year-old donor’s eggs, according to the report. Cook’s contract with the biological father from Georgia would pay her $33,000 for the pregnancy, plus $6,000 for each additional child, the report states. By not aborting the third baby, the father’s lawyer warned Cook that she could lose the money.

The unnamed father sent a letter through his lawyer Friday warning if Cook “refuses to abide by the terms of agreement” she risks “loss of all benefits under the agreement, damages in relation to future care of the children [and] medical costs associated with any extraordinary care the children may need.”

Cook also received a second letter Friday urging her to schedule an abortion before the end of the day, according to the news report.

Cook appeared to be wavering about having an abortion because of the father’s continued pressuring.

“I have to reduce,” Cook said. “I’m scared. I don’t want to suffer.” But at another point in the interview, she said: “They are human beings. I bonded with these kids. This is just not right.”

Cook did send a response to the Georgia father, writing: “The doctor put in three healthy embryos. The chances were high they were all going to take. You knew I was 47 years old. If you knew you only wanted two babies, then why put in three embryos?”

Cook has four of her own children, including a set of triplets, according to the report.

The tragic situation follows the news about another, high-profile surrogacy case involving celebrity Sherri Shepherd.

In 2014, the former “The View” co-host came under fire after reports surfaced showing she wanted “nothing to do” with her unborn, surrogate child because her marriage was ending. Shepherd and husband, Lamar Sally used IVF to conceive a child by a surrogate mother.

As LifeNews previously reported, Sally said in an interview that Shepherd has removed the newborn baby boy she had via surrogate from her health insurance. Shepherd tried to force the surrogate mother to pay child support.
