Georgetown University Violates Catholic Tenants, Pushes Abortion as Zika Virus Solution

Jesuit Georgetown University has rejected Catholic principles in order to promote abortion in South America. This week, two of the university’s law professors posted the article “The [World Health Organization] Must Include Access to Birth Control and Abortion in its Temporary Recommendations for Zika-Associated Public Health Emergency of International Concern” on the college’s website.

In the article, professors Lawrence O. Gostin and Alexandra Phelan argue that abortion should be used as a response to the Zika virus outbreak that hit South America. The mosquito-borne virus is believed to be linked to microcephaly, a neurological disorder where a baby’s head is significantly smaller and the brain is abnormally developed, according to the Mayo Clinic. The condition is not typically fatal, but it can cause health problems throughout the baby’s life.

The World Health Organization reports that the relationship between the virus and microcephaly has not been confirmed yet but is highly suspected. Several South American countries report that the number of babies born with the disorder has been increasing astronomically with the spread of the virus. “Between October 2015 and January this year medics in [Brazil] have registered almost 4,000 cases of microcephaly in newborns, compared to 163 in a normal year,” according to The Pool.

Abortion activists have been using the virus to push abortion on the largely Catholic, pro-life countries in South America. The Georgetown law professors claimed in their article that it is out of respect for women that this drastic measure is encouraged.

“It is critical that these recommendations require countries to respect, protect, and fulfill women’s health-related human rights, including reproductive rights. This includes access to contraception (including the birth control pill and condoms) but also to accessible, affordable, acceptable, and quality abortions,” they wrote.

Advising women to have an abortion goes directly against the teaching of the Catholic Church, and therefore the very principles that Georgetown was founded upon. According to their website, Georgetown is the “nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university.” Yet the school is siding with Planned Parenthood in pushing abortion.

Alumni of the famous school are rightly upset by Georgetown’s recent unorthodox actions. In 2013, the author of The Exorcist William Peter Blatty sent a petition to the Vatican requesting that the Church strip the university of its Catholic and Jesuit labels.

The Brazilian Conference of Catholic Bishops recently responded to the shocking article, saying that there is “no justification whatsoever to promote abortion.” The bishops went on to articulate that promoting abortion “in the cases of microcephaly, as, unfortunately, some groups are proposing to the Supreme Federal Court” demonstrates a “total lack of respect for the gift of life.”

Spokesman for the Catholic Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife in Brazil the Rev. Luciano Brito said, “Nothing justifies an abortion. Just because a fetus has microcephaly won’t make us favorable.”
