Mom Gives Birth to Quintuplets After Rejecting Suggestion to Abort Three of Her Unborn Babies

When Kim and Vaughn Tucci discovered they were pregnant last year, they hoped for a boy. Much to the Perth, Australia family’s surprise, however, they quickly learned that they were not just expecting a boy but four girls, too.

On Jan. 28, Kim Tucci gave birth to her quintuplets when she was 29 weeks pregnant, Fox News reports. Their baby boy, Keith, and his four sisters, Tiffany, Penelope, Beatrix and Allie, all were born within a few minutes of each other, the report states. The naturally conceived quintuplets are extremely rare, a one in 60 million chance.

Kim, who has been blogging about the experience at Surprised By Five, announced their birth on Facebook:

We are very happy to announce the birth of our 5 beautiful babies, born on the 28th of January and just shy of 30 weeks.

We would like to say a big thank you to Dr Jan Dickinson for looking after me and the babies with such love and care. I was very lucky to have an amazing medical team supporting me. Thank you for giving me an exceptional birth!

A local news report states people in the Tucci’s home community of Perth are preparing to provide meals, babysitting and other practical support for the family when the quintuplets arrive home from the hospital. The Tuccis also have two older daughters.

Tucci’s pregnancy with her quintuplets was far from easy. Kim blogged about pain, extreme discomfort, sleepless nights, constant trips to the bathroom and a 6,000-calorie a day diet to sustain her five unborn babies.

Early in her pregnancy, Kim and her husband also learned that some doctors did not celebrate their quintuplets’ rare existence. Instead, they encouraged Kim to abort up to three of them.

On September 26, 2015, she wrote about the experience:

After my initial ultrasound I was told I could consider the selection method [abortion] to give 2 babies the best chance in life… I watched a YouTube video on the procedure and I cried, I could never do that! Was I selfish for not giving two the chance of 100% survival?? All I knew is that I already love them and that every heart beat I heard I connect with them more.

For me life starts when a heart starts beating and all I know for sure is that I will do whatever it takes to bring them into this world healthy.

When the miracle babies were born on Jan. 28, tens of thousands of people who followed their story online rejoiced at their healthy birth.

The Australian mom said all the aches and pains, the stretch marks and hospital stays were worth it, knowing that her babies are healthy. She also thanked her husband for his constant support through her pregnancy struggles.

“My husband always reminds me I should wear my stripes with pride and that I should be proud of them and what my body has achieved. Without him I would have broken down a long time ago,” Kim wrote.

Elizabeth Hoskins, a local photographer who photographed Kim when she was 24 weeks pregnant, described the young mother as radiant. Her photos of Kim and her unborn babies on the beach went viral just a few weeks before their birth.

“She could not be more beautiful …” Hoskins said. “Her strength just shines through every image. A true goddess, indeed.”
