Only 17 Babies With Down Syndrome Were Born in Taiwan as Abortions Target Unborn Babies

Last month, we had the privilege of talking with our affiliate director from Taiwan, Gloria Hsu. She shared not only what is happening in her center, but what is happening in her family to promote the dignity of each and every life!

In Taichung, Taiwan, each woman Gloria Hsu and her staff of four sees gets a clear picture of the value and dignity of each and every human life—particularly when they meet Russell, Gloria’s son, who loves his life with Down syndrome.

Almost all children diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted in Taiwan, and that was the expectation from the doctor’s point of view when he told Gloria and her husband, Clive, that their fourth son had an extra chromosome.

In fact, the Hsu family heard Russell’s diagnosis just two weeks after Gloria’s center, “Pregnancy Support Center,” served its first client in late 2012.

“When the doctor told us the results of Russell’s blood test, he looked at us, nodded and said a simple, ‘it is,’” Gloria, who came to the 2016 Heartbeat International Annual Conference, says. “And that was the extent of our education of Down syndrome.”

The year Russell was born, only 17 babies with Down syndrome were born in Taiwan, which has with a population of over 23 million.

“In a country where there are only about 5 percent Christians, Russell, now 2.5 years old, is a testimony to this nation of a God that has a purpose and a plan for every single life He creates,” Gloria says. “We dream of more moms loving their babies to life every day in this country.”

One of a fledgling number of Heartbeat International affiliates in Asia, the work Gloria and her team are doing—and the courageous lives she and Clive are living—bring a renewed sense of the awe and wonder of every human being, created in God’s image.

“Russell is apple of his brothers’ eyes,” Gloria says. “Sometimes they can’t contain their affection for him, and sometimes they burst at the seams looking at him, talking about his cuteness.

“God has used Russell in our lives to draw us to a more intimate relationship with God. He has softened our hearts and made us more compassionate, lifted more of the veil over our spiritual eyes, and given us a heart to seek Jesus’ face above everything else in this life.”
