Television Producer Wanted to Show an Abortion on Air, But Something Amazing Prevented It

A funny thing happened on the way to Hollywood.

Pro-abortion TV writer and producer Leila Gerstein wanted to write a show about a woman’s positive abortion experience, and she was just about to when something thwarted her plans.

Gerstein is a friend of abortion activist and actress Lena Dunham. Live Action News reports Gerstein recently wrote an op-ed for Dunham’s newsletter about her failed attempts to write TV shows about abortion. She and Dunham recently pitched an idea to HBO about a show set at the last abortion clinic in Texas. Gerstein described the tone as “basically M*A*S*H*” but she said HBO rejected it.

Live Action’s Cassy Fiano reports Gerstein also failed to put abortion-positive messages on the show that she currently is writing for:

Gerstein had written for a number of Hollywood TV shows, but she wasn’t the one in charge, so all of her pleas to put an abortion on the air were denied. Then she got her own show: the dramedy “Hart of Dixie,” about a New York doctor who moves to the south after inheriting a medical practice. But she wrote the show as a light, fluffy rom-com, which she felt wasn’t the proper vehicle to force an abortion plotline into. (You don’t say.)

For the show’s fourth and final season, Gerstein figured she had her chance. She was going to make the character, Zoe Hart, have an abortion… until disaster struck! The star of the show, Rachel Bilson, got pregnant.

So as I’m finishing my show and trying to serve my audience, I’ve got to concoct some scenario in which a smart, feminist, ambitious, 30-year-old doctor at the beginning of her deeply satisfying professional life, who we’ve seen teach BlueBell tweens about contraception, could not only plausibly accidentally get pregnant BUT ALSO opt not to get a simple medical procedure or take a pill and carry on with her life until some future time when she wants to actively choose to get pregnant.

But here is my lead actress, and she will be nine months pregnant when we wrap the season, and … let’s face it, it was a great way to end the show. Dr. Zoe Hart gave birth in our series finale. It was life-affirming and s—, there was a musical number, and everyone cried. But my eighth-grade Women’s Issues club would have been so disappointed.

A pregnancy – a baby – got in the way of Gerstein’s plans to promote her abortion agenda. Though she clearly sees the irony of the situation, Gerstein vowed not to give up her pro-abortion advocacy. It’s sad that not even the celebration of a new baby’s life can influence abortion activists like Gerstein to reconsider their positions.

Fortunately, the abortion advocacy of Gerstein, Dunham and others in Hollywood have not managed to sway the American public. And no matter how hard they try, they will never be able to add enough frills or bows to disguise the ugliness of abortion – or squelch the joy of a welcoming new human life.
