A new vision and mission

On Aug. 2, I will have the distinct honor of unveiling the new vision and mission statement for the Diocese of Green Bay to all diocesan employees, priests and parishes. The update for our priests and parishes will be shared via live streaming video as I present, in person, to our diocesan employees.

A vision and mission statement guides an organization, giving momentum to those who work and live within it. It is simple enough for everyone to memorize and explain, and it helps to inspire and move the organization forward with greater synergy and mutual cooperation. It moves those within the organization to go out beyond themselves and to share the mission with others.

As you can see, this is a lot to expect of just two or three sentences that sum up and express the essence and specific direction for our diocese. Our current vision and mission statement has served the Diocese of Green Bay quite well. However, it is now time to express our mission in a new way, given the great changes happening to the church and the world.

As you know, we are on a common journey in the diocese called Disciples on the Way. We are beginning Phase II of this six-year journey (2014-2020) that will form priests and leaders first, and follow with parishioners in the subsequent years. Phase II is calling and forming us to become “missionary disciples,” which has been the clarion call of the last four popes for the entire Catholic Church.

After much consultation, we are ready to unveil the new vision and mission, as well as share several new diocesan priorities, which will assist us in making the vision and mission more of a concrete reality. As your bishop during this important time of transition and opportunity, I am honored to be a part of what the Holy Spirit will accomplish here among us!

Thanks be to God and to all of you: God bless you!
