Remembering Rick Evans

This week I took a moment to page through issues of The Compass from 1997. I searched for the first story I covered with photographer Rick Evans. Turns out our first dual assignment was a workshop for teens and parents held at Nativity of Our Lord Church in Ashwaubenon. That was the first of many stories we covered together over the years.

Rick died July 23 at age 73. In addition to his photography talents, I always admired the way Rick treated people. He asked questions about the ministry, service project or event and the people involved. He had a genuine interest. He didn’t take a quick photo and leave immediately.

Rick sensed when someone was apprehensive of being photographed. He was very encouraging and would show the person the digital images to put them at ease. He was also very accommodating when someone requested a photo that appeared in The Compass.

When taking photos at a Mass, Rick moved around the church making sure not to cause a distraction. He understood and respected the rites of the Catholic Church. He built good relationships with a number of priests, deacons and parish leaders.

Rick took photos for the diocese at the annual Bishop’s Charities Game for several years. He was a regular at the Catholic Charities Spalding Golf Outing. He enjoyed taking photos of the new deacons and their wives at their retreat prior to ordination. Rick photographed his share of ordinations and special Masses. He was willing to take on all assignments.

There were some light moments. I recall the two of us holding back laughter when Rick’s foot broke through the floor of a choir loft at an old church that was being closed. I always enjoyed working with Rick and am thankful for his friendship.

A visitation for Rick Evans will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home (340 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay), Friday, Aug. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. Deacon Paul Grimm will lead a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6. Bishop Robert Morneau will lead a service at 10 a.m. followed by full military honors.
