Daily Gospel Reflection for October 21, 2016

Today’s Gospel: Luke 12, 54-59

“Speed limit 65 MPH.” “No Smoking Allowed.” “Remove your shoes before reaching security.” “USA Passport holders enter here.” “No shirt, no shoes, no service.” “Sport jacket required.” “No running.” “No throwing the bat.” “$500 fine for littering.” “The line starts here.”

These are all signs – signposts that are instrumental in directing actions and behavior and thoughts. I am proud to say I am an excellent sign-follower. I do not butt in line, I follow the speed limit, and I know what the appropriate attire is for a function.

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” “Honor your father and mother.” “Blessed are the merciful.” “Forgive others as we want to be forgiven.” “Judge not lest you be judged.” “Vengeance is mine.”

More signs… directions for our lives. Am I really a good sign follower? I might have to reconsider that earlier statement. In the Gospel reading, God wonders why we are so much more mindful of earthly signs than spiritual signs or, as I like to call them, “Godposts!”

Are we so blind not to see His signs or are we choosing to ignore them? God calls us hypocrites! Harsh words, but is that an accurate assessment? Do we care more about dress codes than moral codes? Doing what is right comes easy some days. But when it is hard, do we close our eyes to those Godposts? The signs are not hard to see . . . for example, daily readings at mass, examples of the Saints before us, kindnesses offered, expressions of love and friendship, a lonely person, a hungry child. . .

Let’s open our eyes and observe the many Godposts. He is providing these signs as a way for us to predict where our lives are headed. With all these signs, why do we not know how to interpret the present time? Why is it so hard to discern? As St. Luke says, “Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?”

Ponder:

What Godposts have you seen today? Are you letting them guide your actions?

Pray:

Dear God, please remove the blinders from my eyes and provide me the ability to see my own imperfections. With God’s grace, may I gain the wisdom to recognize the many Godposts and the strength to pursue their direction!
