Abortion and same-sex marriage champions Clinton and Warren rally on Catholic college campus

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren — both radically opposed to fundamental moral teachings of the Church — rallied with a slew of other Democrat politicians on the campus of Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire on Monday.

The website of Saint Anselm College promoted the “NH Democratic Party Rally” with a disclaimer that the college is not sponsoring the event, it’s only allowing the rally to be held on campus and advertising it on the school’s website. There was no indication given on the site about how this event furthered the Catholic mission of the college, or how the rally of those who clearly hold positions against Church teaching was aligned with the college’s Catholic identity.

Saint Anselm also hosted Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on campus in June.

Judge allows lawsuit against NJ Catholic school to move forward

A New Jersey Superior Court judge denied a request by Paramus Catholic High School and the Archdiocese of Newark to throw out a lawsuit that was filed by a former employee who was fired after pictures from her same-sex marriage were posted on Facebook.

The attorney for the school and the archdiocese argued that as a religious entity it is exempt from discrimination laws and that the former employee had signed a document agreeing to abide by the tenets of the Catholic religion as a term of her employment.

Pray that the school and the archdiocese continue fighting for their Catholic identity and religious freedom, because not all schools are. Case in point…

Catholic school apologizes for not embracing male student as a girl

A male student who was threatened with suspension from St. Simon Stock Catholic School in the U.K. for wearing the girls’ uniform has emerged victorious after threatening a legal battle.

The school reportedly issued a letter of apology and said the student could wear a girls’ uniform and use girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. A spokesperson for the school said they want to “make sure all students are happy and comfortable.” Obviously they’re focused on earthly happiness and not eternal happiness.

Colleges lowering tuition officially a trend?

The College of Saint Mary for women in Omaha, Neb., announced plans to lower tuition costs by 33 percent for all undergraduate students. This translates to a $10,000 reduction in costs.

College of Saint Mary President Dr. Maryanne Stevens said they are committed to making college affordable and accessible to all. They hope their tuition structure is more transparent to students and families and no longer as reliant on financial aid and scholarships.

It’s not just good business, it’s the right thing to do.

Pope Francis stresses importance of faithful education for the young

Addressing members of the John Paul II Foundation, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary, Pope Francis spoke of the importance of educating young people in the faith.

“Providing formation for young people is an investment for the future: young people must never be robbed of their hope for tomorrow,” he said.

The Pope encouraged the foundation to continue in its commitment “to promote and support the younger generation, so that it can face the challenges of life with evangelical sensitivity and with faith. Providing youth with formation is an investment for the future.”

Celebrity credits Catholic schools for success

Headline: ‘Today’ show’s Al Roker credits Catholic schools for success in life, career.

Me: Sheesh. Catholics get blamed for everything nowadays. (Just a joke for all you Al Roker fans.)

“I am standing here today, as the ‘Today’ show weatherman, because of what I learned at Xavier High School,” said Roker. “My Jesuit priests, my Jesuit teachers taught us to be curious, taught us to be free thinkers, to be compassionate and they also instilled an interest in the arts.”

New Marymount California president emphasizes Catholicism

In his inaugural address as president of Marymount California University on Saturday, Lucas Lamadrid, who was born in Cuba and had been a senior administrator at Belmont Abbey College, emphasized his commitment to Catholic education.

“I believe that Catholic education has never been more crucial to our society, and its contribution is directly related to two virtues: one, humility, and two, hope. … In an age where the loudest or the most arrogant dominant with a philosophy that celebrates the will of power, a Catholic university reminds us that learning begins with the submission of the will to God,” he said.

We’ll keep any eye on how things go. Pray as well.

Amid financial investigation, college president resigns

Amid a forensic investigation into college finances and a financial restructuring expected to include faculty and staff cuts, the president of The College of New Rochelle resigned.

In a press release, the Board of Trustees said the college had accrued “significant unmet financial obligations” which threaten the college’s survival.

After pressure, Boston College deletes Planned Parenthood from list of internships

Boston College pointed students toward information on interning at the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts on its website, but after pressure from TFP Student Action, the Jesuit college deleted the Planned Parenthood link from its website. It’s unclear if the college is still referring students to intern at Planned Parenthood in other, less public, ways.

Baltimore Sun op-ed says school choice supports segregation

A public school teacher argued in the Baltimore Sun that choice in education leads to segregation.

Here’s a choice snippet:

Educational choice is a loaded term with a checkered history. School choice once promised an egalitarian mix of urban and suburban students of all races in one building, but in reality usually meant segregation, with black students confined to certain city schools and whites allowed a means of escape from them. Today school choice often means using public funds to support privatized charter schools of varying quality that usually are not unionized. Today choice means using public funds to provide vouchers to private schools that are allowed by law to discriminate.

I guess trapping poor children in failing schools is much more egalitarian.
