President-Elect Donald Trump to Pick Pro-Life Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers as Interior Secretary

President-elect Donald Trump is continuing his theme of selecting pro-life advocates for key positions in his cabinet. Today the incoming president is in the news for the expected selection of pro-life Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers as his Interior Secretary.

Although the Interior Secretary doesn’t have purview over important pro-life issues, the selection shows that the incoming president has no problem selecting pro-life advocates to serve in his administration.

The naming of the pro-life congresswoman to the interior secretary position follows on the heels of trump naming pro-life Governor Nikki Haley as his UN Ambassador and pro-life senator Jeff Sessions as his attorney general. Trump has also selected pro-life Congressman Tom Price to become his secretary for the health and human services department and he named pro-life physician Ben Carson as his HUD Secretary as well as pro-life advocate Betsy DeVos as his education secretary.

According to the National Right to Life Committee, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers has a 100% pro-life voting record — voting to oppose abortion and abortion funding as well as repealing Obamacare and defunding the Planned Parenthood abortion corporation.

McMorris Rodgers hails from a farming family with deep roots in Eastern Washington, where she grew up working with her parents and brother at their orchard and fruit stand in Kettle Falls.  She was the first in her family to graduate from college and later earned an Executive MBA from the University of Washington.

As Conference Chair, McMorris Rodgers is the fourth highest-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives.  She co-founded the bipartisan Congressional Down Syndrome Caucus and the Congressional Military Family Caucus.  She is married to Brian Rodgers, a retired Navy Commander, and they have three children: Cole, 6; Grace, 3; and Brynn, 2 months.

Rogers became the first woman to give birth three times while serving in Congress. Brynn”s older brother Cole was born in 2007, and sister Grace was born in 2010. According to Roll Call, fellow Republicans Kevin Yoder of Kansas and Brad Wenstrup of Ohio both became fathers earlier this month.

Sharing the picture on Instagram, McMorris Rogers said: “Welcome Brynn Catherine! (Born at 6:19 am on Nov. 24, weighing 7 lbs. 6 oz.) Nothing compares to the miracle of bringing a new life into the world. She’s beautiful and seems to be taking it all in stride. Our hearts are full.”

During her tenure, she has risen to become the highest-ranking woman in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the House, she has been a strong leader in the pro-life movement, voting to ban-late term abortion and sex-selection abortion and has been a steadfast supporter of parental rights. In 2012, she was outspoken in combating the deceitful “War on Women” meme.

Rodgers’ personal story is inspiring. After being elected to Congress, she met and was married to retired Navy commander Brian Rodgers in 2006. Together, they have had three children since 2007, making McMorris Rodgers the first woman to have three children while serving in the U.S. Congress.

In her speech in response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address, McMorris Rodgers discussed those three children. When their first son, Cole, was diagnosed with Down syndrome three days after his birth, McMorris Rodgers said:

“When we looked at our son, we saw possibilities. We saw a Gift from God. Today we see a six-year-old boy who dances to Bruce Springsteen; who reads above grade level; and who is the best big brother in the world. We see all the things he can do, not those he can’t. Cole and his sisters, Grace and Brynn, have only made me more determined to see the potential in every human life – that whether we are born with an extra twenty-first chromosome or without a dollar to our name – we are not defined by our limits, but by our potential.”
