Man is a wonderful work of God’s creative power. Yet he is infected by sin. Today’s reading from Sirach speaks of the response that sinful man must make to his sinful condition.

First of all he must do penance, turn away from his sinfulness, and be attentive to the justice and the judgments of God.

Next he must offer God glory and praise, acknowledging God’s goodness and His majesty during this earthly life, while there is still time.

These are important agenda items for the person who would pursue wisdom. Human beings tend to overlook their sinfulness and take God’s mercy for granted.

Sirach invites us to stand firm in prayer of penitence and praise. The forgiveness and the mercy of the Lord are great.
