Today’s Gospel: John 16:23B-28

Jesus’ words “Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My Name He will give to you” are almost unbelievable at first reading. Really? Whatever I ask? The mind will surely race with possibilities. Our fallen nature may lead some of us to pray for possessions, wealth, travel experiences, etc. Some of us may also pray for the health of a sick loved one, a minute with a deceased friend or relative, world peace, or just peace of mind.

What’s interesting though is that in the very next line Jesus gives us a prerequisite: “Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete”. Docility, humility, and obedience are the things that come to mind as necessary conditions to “receive, so that your joy may be complete.” How hard is it for us to do the right thing all the time? How much of a challenge is it for us to live our faith in the individualistic and selfish throwaway world of today? And maybe this is exactly what Jesus is exhorting the Apostles to do, to face their challenges and fears. He knows that all of the them except for John will be martyrs. He knows that they will face terrible trials, but He will be the first. And still, He asks them to have the will and perseverance to follow Him. He will lead them and show them the way. Later when He begs the Father in Gethsemane to take the cup away, He immediately lets in the Father’s will and subsequently our salvation.

How often do we put limits on Jesus, keeping Him at arm’s length? By @imperfectmikeClick To Tweet

Ponder:

How often do we put limits on Jesus, keeping Him at arm’s length, simply because we lack the faith to allow Him to work within us?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, I thank You for all You have given me in this world. Please help me to be docile, humble, and obedient in my life, my work, and my prayer. Amen.
