Mother Releases Heartbreaking Photo of Her Goodbye to Her Stillborn Son

Kayleigh Atkins refused to abort her unborn son twice, only for him to be stillborn.

Throughout her pregnancy, Atkins refused to treat her unborn son as any less valuable than he was. Because she chose life, Atkins had the chance to make some beautiful memories with her son that will stay with her forever.

“I close my eyes and I’m back in the room with Charlie in my arms,” she wrote on her blog. “I would do anything to go back, I wouldn’t change it because I kissed him as much as I could, I slept next to my baby both nights, I held him close to my heart at every chance I could, I sniffed my baby’s scent every second. I have beautiful beautiful memories with my boy.”

The 21-year-old mom from Cardiff, Wales recently shared a photo of her holding her stillborn son, Charlie, to show how precious his short life was, according to The Metro.

Atkins learned that her unborn son had heart problems in November when she was 11 weeks pregnant. Seeing her son on the ultrasound screen, she said she realized that her baby was “so little, yet so precious.” She said the doctor asked her if she wanted an abortion twice, but she said no both times.

“The doctor offered us a termination, but I could never choose to end my baby’s life,” Atkins said. “I would fight with my last breath for him or her.”

Later in the pregnancy, Atkins’ doctors discovered that Charlie’s problem was a hole in his heart and might die before birth, according to the report. A second time, the doctor asked if she wanted to abort Charlie, and she said no again.

Atkins said she hoped and prayed that Charlie would survive. But last month, his heart stopped when he was nearly full term. After 35 weeks of pregnancy, Charlie entered the world stillborn. He weighed 2 pounds, 8 ounces, according to the report.

“They passed my baby for a cuddle and I have never seen anything so beautiful,” Atkins said. “He had blue eyes, the smallest and cutest button nose, chunky cheeks and the most perfect pouty lips which were shaped like a heart.”

The family snapped a few photos together while they had the chance to hold Charlie’s body. Atkins said she had Charlie blessed at the hospital before they buried his tiny body.

“Me and my mum sat crying for five hours – tears of sadness, but also tears of happiness because we were proud,” she continued. “I was the proudest mummy ever. So much love in one little room.”

The heartbroken mother said she would give anything now to be woken up in the middle of the night to change his diaper or feed him – “the things other mothers take for granted.”

“I have never felt so much pain in my life,” Atkins wrote on her blog. “My Charlie Button – fly high mummy’s prince. I love and miss you unconditionally always.”
