Daily Gospel Reflection for September 20, 2017 - Sts. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn & Companions

Today’s Gospel: Luke 7:31-35 – Sts. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn & Companions

Some of us, as young adults in the 1960s, are from a generation when boundaries were being broken. Everyone was being emancipated from almost anything. Liberation was the operative word; from discrimination to monogamy, it was all freedom, peace and love. There was a shift in accountability—do whatever you please and don’t infringe on another’s right to do as they please. It all sounded good at the time, to have freedom to be whoever and do whatever was wanted as long as nobody else got hurt.

With that revolution, morals and sound judgment went haywire.

Those who did not partake of that new norm were bullied as old fashioned, unhip, not cool. Today, decades later, that same revelation of freedom has brought its own condemnation. The self-centeredness created by years glorifying secular freedom has imprisoned many souls. An aging generation now sees the folly of its ways, possible too late to reverse its influence on a world now seemingly gone insane.

There is a core truth in humanity. That truth lies in the freedom of God’s ways. There is pleasure in serving Our Lord, going beyond the pleasures that are gratifying and expected in this realm. The wisdom of heaven has revealed, as it has in countless generations before, that we can be foolish when we place our focus on personal pleasures instead of eternal joy.

Ponder:

How have your worldly views changed as you’ve matured in your faith?

Pray:

Heavenly Father, grant me the wisdom to let go of beliefs that seemed wise at the time, that now stand between me and You.
