Today’s Gospel: Luke 12:1-7

When I read this passage, I immediately thought of the video of persecuted Christians in orange jumpsuits in the Middle East, kneeling on the ground, about to be beheaded. They did not flinch, for they knew that the terrorists could kill their bodies, but never their souls. They knew that their souls would live on, untouchable by the evil deeds of men. They remained true to Christ, and did not deny Him. They became martyrs for the Faith.

Jesus warns us that we have no need to fear evil. Rather, we need to be concerned about how we will answer to the Father at our particular judgments. He tells us not to be afraid. Yet, if we were to read a little further, we would be reminded that “everyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God” (Luke 12:8-9). Therefore, embrace Christ and His Gospel message. Believe in Christ! Follow Him! Acknowledge Him, and never deny Him!

Ponder:

Could you be as strong-willed as those men kneeling on the ground about to be beheaded? Would you have the courage to defend your belief in Christ, or might you falter out of fear?

Pray:

Lord, give me the courage to profess my faith in You, especially at times when it would be easier to remain silent. Let me never deny my relationship with You.
