Today is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On this day we commemorate the appearance of Mary to the Indian Juan Diego, an event that gave rise to a devotion to Mary embracing Catholics all over the American world.

The responsorial psalm for this day is from the Book of Judith. According to the story in the Bible, Judith delivered her town from siege by killing the enemy general as he slept. The governor of the town addressed to Judith the words that the liturgy has taken up for today’s psalm. The words of praise originally addressed to Judith are now being applied to Mary.

Mary is the highest honor of our race; the one whose actions for God’s people will never be forgotten.
