Parents Release Photos of Baby Miscarried at 5 Weeks to Show Humanity of Unborn Children
Just a few weeks after hearing the good news that they were expecting a second child, Nick and Sarah Szmiot lost their baby in an early miscarriage. Though heartbroken, the Szmiots decided to celebrate their baby’s very short life and share their family’s story with the world.
Nick and Sarah told LifeNews that they were thrilled when they got the chance to hear their baby’s heartbeat during an ultrasound appointment just three weeks into the pregnancy.
“A few weeks later, we we went in for another a ultrasound and the little heart was no longer beating,” Nick said. Sarah was between 5-6 weeks pregnant at the time.
A few days later, Sarah miscarried baby Reuben’s body, and they had the rare experience of being able to see their baby in the amniotic sack. At such an early stage of pregnancy, unborn babies are so small that their tiny bodies often are not recovered during miscarriages.
“We removed him and were able to hold him in the palm of our hands,” Nick said. “Difficult but rejoicing time. Baby Reubie went to be with the Lord!”
After the miscarriage, they grieved the loss of their baby, but they also wanted to celebrate Reuben’s life. So, they invited their family over for a small birthday party for baby Reuben – complete with a birthday cake, candles and a song. Nick and Sarah took photos with their daughter, Joy, to remember the bittersweet moment as a family.

The Szmiot family shared photos of baby Reuben with LifeNews because they want society to see that babies have value, even at so young an age. Though their baby was smaller than a quarter, the photos show how Reuben’s head and eyes, arms and legs already were growing.
About a third of all unborn babies who are aborted in the U.S. are less than seven weeks gestation, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Though these babies already have their own unique DNA, heartbeats and forming organs, limbs and eyes, abortion activists often describe them as meaningless clumps of cells.
“Everyone needs to see that at 5-6wks, you can see head, hands, feet, eyes of this precious little creation,” Nick said. “This isn’t tissue. It’s a life created in God’s image with a heart and a eternal living soul!”
