Review: Scriptural Rosary App by Valent Richie

rosary_with_bibleEver since I became a Catholic, praying the rosary has been a challenge for me. Not because it’s particularly hard, but because I’m very absent minded. I need something visual to focus on, otherwise I get distracted. There are podcasts that help you pray, but I have the same problem there: my mind goes elsewhere after a few minutes. Therefore I tried to find a good app on my iPhone and came accross the Scriptural Rosary App by Valent Richie.

A visual guide
The app guides you through the whole process, printing the text on the screen and providing beautiful art at the beginning of every decade. I like doing a scriptural rosary where you say or meditate on a specific bible verse that fits with the mystery you’re working on. This prevents me from getting distracted. I see the bible verse on the screen of my phone and say the Hail Mary while focusing on the verse. I am not getting distracted anymore and notice something happening during prayer.

Settings
In the settings, you can ask the app to alert you daily to pray, it comes with several languages: English, Spanish, Korean, French and Italian. There is also an option to switch to Latin prayers if you are so inclined. You can choose from various Bible translations for your verses, and you can choose whether you want to pray the new luminous mysteries or not.

Recommendation
The app will remember where you left off in case you don’t complete your rosary, so it’s easy to pick up where you left the next day. Praying the rosary has become an entirely new experience for me. Thank God for smartphones! I would give this app 4 out of 5 stars, because the only thing I miss a little bit is the option to turn audio on, much like the Divine Office app offers for their Liturgy of the Hours. Apart from that, I would really recommend this app to anyone who likes to pray the Rosary with a visual guide.
