It’s just the most natural, healthy, planned-by-God, good-enough-for-Our-Lady-and-Lord-and-Savior, and supported-by-Pope-Francis way to feed a baby. When babies cry, it often means they’re hungry. Moms have all sorts of ways (shawls, blankets, special clothes) to remain modest while feeding their babies. But, even if they didn’t, there’s still this:

In fact, type in a Google image search for “Madonna del Latte”. Aversion to nursing (and the suggestion that breastfeeding is somehow “bad” or “sexual”) isn’t a Catholic attitude, but a Puritan one. Catholic Tradition has so many such examples that you have things like this, at the Duomo in Florence (of all places!):
