Compass in Classroom program offering teacher worksheets

The Compass, newspaper for the Diocese of Green Bay, is collaborating with other diocesan departments on a new feature for children. In September, as part of its “Compass in the Classroom,” a newspaper in education program, The Compass began offering a monthly classroom worksheet that teachers can download from The Compass website. Each worksheet is intended to help teachers (Catholic school and religious education) integrate the diocesan newspaper into classroom curriculum. It is a companion piece to a weekly “Compass in the Classroom” column.

The inaugural worksheet, “Tweet Trivia with the Holy Father,” features 10 recent tweets from Pope Francis with a missing phrase. Students are asked to fill in the blanks. Other worksheet topics for the year will include respect life, vocations, stewardship, immigration, schools, Lent, parish ministers, adoption awareness and college prep.

“Teachers have so much work to cover in a short period of time, especially during weekly religious education classes, and I wanted to assist by cutting down on their class preparation time,” said Amy Kawula, advertising and marketing manager at The Compass, who spearheaded the worksheet project. “This will make our Compass in the Classroom program easier for teachers already doing so much. They are now available online and can be found very quickly — lesson plans at their fingertips.”

The Compass’ newspaper in education program is sponsored by generous donors who provide 25 free copies of the diocesan newspapers to teachers who register. Last year, 2,424 copies of The Compass were delivered to 111 classrooms. Teachers interested in participating in Compass in the Classroom can go to this link for more information.
