When Small is BIG #SmallSuccess

It’s been quite a week. Once again, we have had school delays and cancellations, which seems to be the theme of this winter. There was a new job (a big deal!) and a multi-day Puketivities Festival (as I write this, we’re still not in the clear with the mancub superhero, but I have hope).

But the small thing that struck me this week, among all the others, was due to an email I sent. I sent it to a group of colleagues who are among the best I’ve ever been blessed to work with, and I was, in effect, telling them that I had to change responsibilities and that we wouldn’t be working together in the same way.

A lot of my heart went into this email I sent, and I prayed and discerned before reaching the decision that led to it.

And then the replies started coming in.

In the midst of holding my boy’s hand as he leaned over a bucket, getting him yet another warm washcloth for his forehead, washing and disinfecting every surface he looked at, and juggling work duties, there were these notes that felt like they came from God himself.

Some of them were simple one-liners, thanking me and wishing me well. Others were paragraphs describing how I had made a personal impact in their lives. At least a dozen offered prayers for my family and all of them made me thankful.

Because really, this work we do here in the Catholicosphere, online, is often invisible. And I try to smile and laugh and keep it light, but it’s heavy work at times. It’s demanding and it never stops and OH MY WORD THE WORLD IS FALLING TO PIECES.

There is a little corner of life and these people who I’m called to raise as saints and my vocation and all these many, many things.

But the small words of encouragement…those were the big gold this week. And not just this week. So often, those brief phrases are the still, small voice of God reminding me of the priorities he’s planted in my heart, the call he’s placed deep within me.

My dishes are done, my laundry is clean, my boy is sleeping peacefully. I have time to blog, time to read, time to scratch my head and think about what I’ll wear tomorrow.

There’s so much small stuff piled up around me, reminding me to be thankful. So today, in the midst of the busy and crazy and cold, possibly punctuated by that coughing sound that can get a nine-months-pregnant woman moving like nothing else, I’m going to stop and say thanks for them.
