Chris Christie Faces Criticism for Saying Aborting a Baby After Rape is “Self-Defense” for Women

During last night’s Republican presidential debate, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie defended abortions on unborn children in cases of rape or incest. Although Christie opposes abortions in every other situation, he quickly came under fire from pro-life advocates after he referred to such abortions as “self-defense.”

“I believe that if a woman has been raped, that is a pregnancy that she should be able to terminate. If she is a victim of incest, this is not a woman’s choice, this is a woman being violated,” Christie said.

He continued: “The fact is that we have always believed, as has Ronald Reagan, that we have self defense for women who have been raped and impregnated because of it or been victims of incest and been impregnated for it. I believe that they do not have to deliver that child if they believe that is an act of self defense by terminating that pregnancy.”

The responses from pro-life advocates on twitter were fast and furious:

SIGN THE PLEDGE: I Pledge to Vote for a Pro-Life Candidate for President

5/ By championing the killing of babies as “self defense” because of crimes of rapist father, @ChrisChristie abandoned prolife principle

I am still wincing over Christie’s brutal description of when it’s ok to kill your baby. Horrid. Horrid. — Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) February 7, 2016

“An act of self-defense in terminating that pregnancy.” A repugnant statement in every circumstance but when life of the mother is at stake

A woman has a right to self-defense against her rapist. We should kill or castrate rapists. Killing babies is wrong. End of story.

Shameful that @ChrisChristie would call the abortion of an innocent child “self-defense.” The child is blameless. #GOPDebate

I know someone who was conceived via rape. Her life is no less valuable than mine. That was a disgusting answer from Christie. — Ellen L. Carmichael (@ellencarmichael) February 7, 2016

@JebBush @ChrisChristie Meet @RebeccaKiesslin she is brilliant, beautiful, & conceived in rape. Talk to her, she will save u from ur selves

@World_W_No_End @ChrisChristie @JebBush @RebeccaKiesslin How about, ‘I’m not going to punish a child for the crimes of her father.” — Lauren Muzyka (@LaurenMuzyka) February 7, 2016

Rebecca Kiessling, who was conceived in rape, was flabbergasted that Christie defended abrotions that could have claied her life.

“Children like me ‪#‎conceivedinrape‬ are really taking a beating tonight! Who will defend us?” she asked. “What message does that send? Such discrimination would never be tolerated with any other people group!”

@World_W_No_End @ChrisChristie @JebBush @RebeccaKiesslin When candidates push for abortion in rape, they tell Rebecca: you shouldn’t live.
