The example of a Catholic athlete who put his faith into action is as close as an Italian restaurant from the main street in the "Hill" neighborhood of south St. Louis.
I'm referring to former athlete and sports broadcaster Joe Garagiola, who grew up on Elizabeth Avenue on the "Hill" and died March 23 at age 90. Like his boyhood buddy and fellow ballplayer Yogi Berra, also from the "Hill," he maintained his love for the Catholic faith and his family's parish, St. Ambrose.
