Pennsylvania Senate Candidate Katie McGinty Won’t Say if She’ll Force You to Fund Abortions
The U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania is becoming one of the most watched and most expensive races in the country. U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, a pro-life Republican and the incumbent, is facing challenger Katie McGinty, a pro-abortion Democrat.
McGinty has received endorsements from several pro-abortion groups, including Planned Parenthood and Emily’s List; however, she is staying tight lipped about whether she supports her party’s goal to force taxpayers to fund abortions, The Weekly Standard reports.
Earlier this summer, the Democratic Party adopted a widely unpopular new measure in its platform calling for taxpayer-funded abortions and the repeal of the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment prohibits direct taxpayer funding of most abortions and has done so since the late 1970s. Upheld by the Supreme Court, the amendment is now a target of abortion advocates who have moved from pro-choice to pro-abortion — forcing Americans not only to accept unlimited abortions before birth but also to pay for them.
Even some Democrats have called the new pro-abortion platform “crazy.” Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine himself has flip-floped on the issue several times in the past few weeks and refused to say how he would vote. Hillary Clinton supports forcing taxpayer-funded abortions.
McGinty is pro-abortion, but on Monday, she ran around the issue during an an interview with the Pennsylvania press club. When asked directly if she supports her party’s platform to repeal the Hyde Amendment, the pro-abortion Democrat replied with a non-answer.
“I believe that women’s health care choices have been politicized for too much. I think these are difficult choices ….” McGinty said, “and I believe in the privacy of women and their families in making the decisions.”
She also said she is “proud to stand” with Planned Parenthood, one of the groups pushing to repeal Hyde and force taxpayers to fund abortions.
McGinty’s campaign did not respond to The Weekly Standard’s email asking where she stands on taxpayer funding for abortions.
Abortion groups are pouring a lot of outside money into Pennsylvania to back McGinty. LifeNews reported Planned Parenthood launched a $1.3 million ad campaign earlier in August to attack Toomey’s pro-life statements.
The pro-abortion group Emily’s List also has spent more than $3 million through its affiliated Women Vote! Super PAC on the Pennsylvania Senate race, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Toomey has a 100-percent pro-life voting record and the backing of several pro-life groups. Toomey supports a ban on taxpayer funding for abortions and wants Roe v. Wade to be overturned.
Maria Gallagher, Legislative/PAC Director for the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, an affiliate of National Right to Life, told LifeNews earlier this month that Toomey is “securely in the mainstream” when it comes to representing Pennsylvanians on the abortion issue.
“Senator Toomey has been a strong and eloquent voice in the U.S. Senate,” Gallagher said. “Katie McGinty would be a mouthpiece for the abortion industry if elected this year.”
