Your weekly summary of the latest in Catholic education:

Another Catholic school is being sued, this time by a student

After being suspended last year for attempting to bring a male date to the homecoming at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tenn., a male student, now a freshman at DePaul University (surprise surprise), is suing Christian Brothers High School for “emotional distress and violating federal anti-discrimination laws.” Being crystal clear on their human sexuality policies and strong in their Catholic identity will help schools fend off these increasing legal threats.

Uh-oh: federal government ‘worried’ about homeschoolers

Those homeschooling students, with their high performance rates, their classical education background and faith-filled lives, worry Education Secretary John King.

King said he worries that homeschooled students aren’t “getting the range of options that are good for all kids” and that “students who are homeschooled are not getting kind of the rapid instructional experience they would get in school.”

In my experience, when the federal government says they’re worried about you, it means hold on to your freedom.

Jesuit high school alum banned from Facebook for Tim Kaine comments

After posting a laudatory USA Today piece about how vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine lives by the Jesuit maxim “men and women for others,” a Jesuit high school in Phoenix banned an alumnus from its Facebook site for commenting that Kaine is certainly not a “man for the unborn.”

Hilariously, the school accused him of making a political statement even though they were the ones who linked the political article in the first place. #21stcenturyjesuits

Jesuit educators cheer pro-abortion congressman

The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and Holy Cross College proudly boasted and thanked Rep. Mark DeSaulnier of California for “representing the Jesuit educated alumni of Congress!” Rep. DeSaulnier is, predictably, pro-abortion and “celebrated” the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling.

Not giving money qualifies as harassment?

After inviting and then un-inviting a pro-abortion judge to campus, a Catholic college president claims she was the “subject of social and psychological harassment” from “unsettling” pro-lifers — so much so that she was “worried about safety of students.”

So what occurred?

“Did anybody threaten to break my arms or legs? No. Did the behavior expose myself and others on campus to social or psychological harassment? Yes. Were there economic threats? Yes,” she said. “Just because nobody threatened physical harm does not mean that there was no threat.”

Refusing to give your money to Catholic colleges with bad ideas = the new harassment. #safespaces

A Catholic school recipe for success?

Three years ago, Sacred Heart Academy in Grand Rapids, Mich., was a failing school, down to just 69 students.

Mix in a newly instituted Catholic liberal arts curriculum, baste in a renewed commitment to the faith, add a healthy dash of guidance from the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education, and hold the government funding and you’ve got yourself a reinvigorated school with 300 students, rising test scores and a bright future.

And repeat.

Groundbreaking! Catholic university to open in Communist Vietnam

The first Catholic university in Vietnam since Communist rule began in 1975, the Catholic Institute of Vietnam, was inaugurated on September 14 in Ho Chi Minh City, welcoming 23 students — many of whom are priests.

Give the Holy Spirit a little room to work and miracles are sure to follow.

Visiting the sick is one of the Beatitudes, playing the ukulele for them is just awesome

A beautiful story about young people living (and performing) for others. The Ukulele Angels, a group of students from St Andrew’s Catholic College in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, volunteer their time to brighten the lives of cancer patients with music.

“The silence gets to be a bit deafening up here so hopefully the music just brings a little bit more joy into the room,” said one student.

Catholic college blasted for shutting down student newspaper, but it’s good news

The College Media Association (CMA) censured Saint Peter’s University in New Jersey for what they consider a violation of the spirit of the First Amendment for shutting down the student-run newspaper, which ran sex-themed articles unfit for a Catholic institution.

According to the provost, the sexual content of the issue was considered to be “degrading of human intimacy” and “nothing but offensive” for the Jesuit institution.

Good job, St. Peter’s. And mind your own business CMA.
