Daily Gospel Reflection for October 27, 2016

Today’s Gospel: Luke 13, 31-35

I believe today, this world needs more super heroes like Jesus. My children love reading books about super heroes. I feel as if this passage shows us just how strong Jesus is and His unwillingness to be deterred.

We find in this passage that Herod wants to kill Jesus. The Pharisees are telling Jesus to leave and not even go to Jerusalem. It’s almost as if at that moment, I can picture Jesus, standing tall in His super hero cape, holding His hand in the air, commanding, demanding even, that nothing will stop Him from completing His mission from God. He must return to Jerusalem. He knows His mission will not be complete until He returns.

Jesus then begins to sound incredibly sad at what Jerusalem is doing to its super heroes. He cries out and asks why. This is so similar to today, when we hear about Christians being persecuted throughout the world. The similarities between this passage and today are incredible. In a culture swamped with relativism and materialism, no respect for life or marriage, it could be said that the “Super Heroes” of today are being persecuted as much as Jesus and the prophets of the past.

Standing up for the truth on any moral issue these days can bring about many attacks. As Catholic Christians, we long to bring everyone together to know, love, and serve a great God. Unfortunately, a person only has to scroll through social media to see what people find worth worshiping these days. But Jesus gives us hope with His final words in that passage, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” We can hold onto that during these trials of life. We can stand tall, and proudly proclaim the Word of God.

Ponder:

What will you do today to stand as a Super Hero in this world and defend life in this culture of death? Remember, God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.

Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, we come to you today and pray with sincere and earnest hearts, that you, the God of the Universe, will continue to help us hold fast to the truths of the faith. Help us all be witnesses in your Name, despite the personal persecutions, humiliations, or tribulations we may face. Amen.
