Woman Who Survived Abortion: “If Abortion is Merely About Women’s Rights, Then Where Were Mine?”

Abortion survivor Gianna Jessen posed a powerful question to abortion advocates Saturday during the March for Life in Rome, Italy.

Jessen was a speaker at the annual march, which drew thousands of pro-life advocates to the city to call for protections for human life, the National Catholic Register reports. About 100,000 unborn babies are aborted every year in Italy, according to the march organizers.

“I would like to gently ask the feminists who are listening … if abortion is merely about women’s rights, then what were mine?” Jessen said.

Jessen told the crowd that she survived a saline abortion in 1977 when her mother was 7 ½ months pregnant with her. In a saline, or salt poisoning, abortion, the abortion practitioner injects a poisonous solution into the womb that burns and suffocates the unborn baby. The abortion harmed Jessen, but it did not kill her.

“… I arrived alive, in an abortion clinic and not in a hospital. I love to say this: I am alive by the power of Jesus Christ. I am unashamed of Jesus, and I shout His Name in the streets of Rome so everyone can hear. Gesu! Gesu! Gesu!” she said as pro-life advocates cheered.

When Jessen was born, she said she weighed just 2 pounds. The abortion practitioner was not at the abortion facility when she arrived, so a nurse called an ambulance, she said.

“Had [the abortion practitioner] been there, he would have ended my life by strangulation, suffocation or leaving me there to die,” she said.

Jessen said she does have some health problems, including cerebral palsy, as a result of the failed abortion, but she is alive.

“I was later adopted, I was told I would never walk, but I want to tell you than no human being can ever tell you what your destiny is. Only God can,” she said.

Jessen is not the only baby to survive an abortion. Melissa Ohden and Claire Culwell are others. They all are part of The Abortion Survivors Network, which educates the public about people who have survived failed abortions and the value of their lives. Since it began in 2012, the group has connected with least 177 people who have survived abortions.

Jessen, Ohden and Culwell especially are active in the pro-life movement, speaking publicly across the world, providing support to help moms choose life for their babies and even testifying in front of Congress.

Through their unique stories, they help people to understand that every baby in the womb deserves the right to life.
